Maclean's names Kingston a top spot to live
Kingston has made Maclean's list of top ten, best affordable places to live in Canada.
The long-time Canadian publication notes that for its list it was required that "The benchmark home price still falls under the national average of $700,000." There were other guidelines to be included on the list, "Each city we’re featuring is buzzing with economic activity, innovative new businesses, delicious dining options and cultural touchstones.
Macleans says the inclusion of Kingston on the list highlights its unique blend of affordability and lifestyle. With a population of 132,485 and a benchmark housing price of $559,000, Kingston is quickly becoming a desirable destination for those looking to escape the high costs of larger cities.
According to Maclean’s, Kingston "has been on the kind of epic building spree that puts other mid-sized Canadian cities to shame." In 2023 alone, the city began construction on over 1,400 homes, more than doubling the target set by the province. Upcoming developments include the nine-floor Crown condo in downtown, multiple residential towers in the Williamsville area, and a six-storey project at the former Frontenac Mall.
Affordable housing options are abundant in Kingston’s northwest neighborhoods like Polson Park and Hillendale, where ’50s- and ’60s-era bungalows with spacious lots are priced below $600,000. Kingscourt offers renovated homes for well under $500,000.
Beyond housing, Kingston’s charm lies in its "postcard-perfect wraparound views of Lake Ontario" and its vibrant cultural scene, with festivals, theaters, and diverse dining options. It's no surprise Kingston is becoming a top choice for affordable living in Canada.
It's people are also incredible as well and are known as a giving, generous, and creative group.
