What's good in Kingston

Getting students up to speed on fire safety

Many students are living away from home for the first time as they began their post-secondary journeys earlier this month.

That means dealing with some pretty serious situations. Among them is fire safety.

Chief Fire Prevention Officer Ted Posadowski says fire safety is taught in dorms, but once students leave things can change.

He says once those are in place, they can focus on other aspects like safe cooking practices.

Posadowski also says some of the calls they get to the University District are malicious alarms in residence.

That's three fewer trucks to respond to an actual emergency. Overall though, Posadowski says the relationships with students are good and get stronger every year.
