Kingston group supports African grandmothers with creativity and care

The Kingston Grandmother Connection (KGC), launched in September 2006, has become a powerhouse of support for African grandmothers and children. Inspired by Stephen Lewis' “Call to Action,” four Kingston women founded the group after attending a Stephen Lewis Foundation conference. Co-chair Deb Ruse explains what they're all about.

From its modest beginnings, the KGC grew from 4 to 20 members, welcoming women eager to make a difference. Today, the group of over 200 hosts creative fundraisers like potluck dinners, picnics, craft sales, and pub nights. With an annual voluntary fee of $20, the KGC has provided critical aid through Help Lesotho and the Stephen Lewis Foundation, assisting over 1,400 grandmothers and 4,200 children. Deb explains why support is so badly needed.

Their contributions include food, blankets, medical workshops, and joyful “Grandmother Days” in Lesotho. Open to all, the KGC continues to thrive with energy and heart, proving that small efforts can create global change. Deb provided one recent example of how the funds they raise help those in need.

So far, KGC has raised well over $800,000 towards meeting these tremendous needs half a world away. Through KGC, area residents can step forward and do something to improve the lives of those less fortunate. See their website at g2gkingston.ca to learn how you can become involved and as Ghandi put it "be the change you want to see in your world."
