Upgrades support future housing while creating a safer space
The University District's Aberdeen Street is open to traffic again after months of construction.
The street closed in July 2024 for major upgrades to underground infrastructure to support future housing projects. Crews installed a new water main and separated the sewer system into stormwater and wastewater lines.
To improve pedestrian safety, a four-way stop was added at William Street, and the boulevard was widened. Large cement planters were also installed to protect newly planted trees, which will be filled with greenery next summer.
The design considered the area’s regular street parties too. The city worked with police to avoid installing benches and bike racks, which could cause hazards during events.
Lighting upgrades are also coming, with streetlights increasing from two to 20 by late 2025.
Aberdeen Street’s reconstruction promises a safer and more modern space for residents and visitors alike.
