Annual tribute to 9/11's fallen firefighters held in Napanee

Firefighters wearing full gear, climbed 110 flights of stairs

Planet Fitness in Napanee has once partnered with the Greater Napanee Fire Department to host the 5th annual 9/11 memorial stair climb.

Members of the Greater Napanee Fire Department and their counterparts in their mutual support area hit the gym to climb 110 flights on the stair climb machines in homage to their counterparts in New York City who lost their lives during the attack on America on Sept. 11th, 2001.

After her climb, Lianne McCauley, Captain of the Stone Mills Fire Department told us it’s an honour to be able to pay tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes, crashing two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and another into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers.

The attacks caused the collapse of the Twin Towers and significant destruction at the Pentagon, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths and leading to widespread global changes in security and foreign policy.
