Kingston Police alert public to taxi scam involving bank card theft
Kingston Police are warning the public about a recent taxi scam involving the theft of victims' bank cards.
Over the past month, three incidents have been reported at a west-end department store on Midland Avenue.
According to police, the scam unfolds when a suspect posing as a taxi fare approaches an unsuspecting victim. The scammer claims that the taxi does not accept cash and offers the victim cash in exchange for using their debit or credit card. The taxi operator, allegedly in on the scam, then swaps the victim's card with a similar-looking one.
The suspects subsequently use the stolen card to make unauthorized withdrawals and purchases.
This scam has been reported in other municipalities across the province. In the Kingston incidents, the involved vehicle featured a 'taxi' sign located on the seat rather than mounted on the roof.
Kingston Police urge anyone who encounters this situation to refuse the transaction and report the incident immediately.
