Former encampment residents can get belongings
The City of Kingston has closed a large section of Belle Park due to health and safety concerns.
The closure affects 1.25 hectares of the park and the nearby K&P Trail. No one will be allowed to enter the park for recreation or overnight sheltering. This action is being taken to address rodent infestations and soil contamination.
The move comes about two weeks after a double murder near the site.
City officials are working with KFL&A Public Health to clean and restore the park.
Addiction & Mental Health Services (AMHS) and Kingston Community Health Centres (KCHC) are assisting people who were previously sheltering near the Integrated Care Hub. They are helping them retrieve personal belongings and find temporary shelter.
The Integrated Care Hub and Consumption Treatment Services will remain closed until further safety plans are made. Security will continue to be provided at the site.
The City encourages vulnerable individuals to seek indoor shelter while Belle Park remains closed.
