City of Kingston warns of parking ticket text message scam
The City of Kingston has issued a warning about a recent smishing scam targeting local residents.
Reports indicate that individuals have received suspicious text messages demanding immediate payment for purported outstanding parking tickets. The fraudulent messages prompt recipients to click on a link and provide sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, banking details, and passwords.
One such message reads: "You currently have an outstanding parking ticket that must be paid by May 28, 2024. In order to avoid incurring additional fees: [website URL]."
City officials emphasize that they do not use text messages to follow up on parking ticket payments. Legitimate payments can be made by mail, in person at the City Hall Payment Centre, or via the 24-hour collection box at City Hall's Market Street entrance.
Residents are advised to report any incidents of fraud to Kingston Police at 613-546-4660.
