Calves tossed onto 401 after makeshift trailer crashes

Driver facing many charges

A small crossover towing a homemade trailer carrying eight dairy calves caused a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Joyceville Road in Kingston last Friday morning.

The trailer was inadequate for the load and broke apart, spilling the calves onto the highway. Several calves were injured and required veterinary care.

In an attempt to avoid the cattle, two tractor trailers collided in a secondary crash. Frontenac officers, along with a CFIA inspector, safely removed the animals. The calves, en route from Montreal to St. Catharines, were seized for further investigation.

The driver, Omar Selma, 25, from Montreal, was charged with operating an unsafe vehicle, failure to surrender a licence, and towing a trailer without a plate. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 9, 2024. The highway was closed for about five hours for cleanup.
