Spring thaw and extra rain sparks caution
Cataraqui Conservation is urging residents to prepare for the seasonal changes expected in the region. A brief warm-up is forecast from March 4 to 6, with temperatures possibly reaching 10°C and rainfall between 15-30 mm. Afterward, temperatures are expected to drop below zero, but forecasts suggest consistent daytime highs above freezing starting March 10 or 11.
This warming trend signals the beginning of the spring freshet (snowmelt) period. The snowpack in the region is currently about twice the normal depth, and the impending snowmelt, combined with rainfall and frozen ground, is expected to raise water levels and flows on lakes and streams.
Though the snowpack could contribute to a heavier freshet, it’s too early to predict the full impact. Water managers are actively adjusting discharge to manage excess flows. While widespread flooding is not expected, the usual springtime inundation of low-lying areas is likely.
Cataraqui Conservation advises caution around dams, fast-flowing watercourses, and ice conditions. Residents are reminded to stay clear of water edges and to follow all safety warnings. For the latest updates, visit the flood forecasting page.
