Not sitting well with two owners
City council has approved heritage designations for several properties on Montreal Street despite opposition from their owners. The properties at 140-150 Montreal St., 145-149 Montreal St., and 97 Bay St. will now be protected for their historical significance.
The two-storey limestone terrace at 140-150 Montreal St., built around 1875, is noted for its 19th-century working-class character. The properties at 145-149 Montreal St. and 97 Bay St. are also valued for their historical features, including late Victorian architecture and connections to architect Robert Gage.
Jeffrey Blasko and Carly Lindsay, owners of 149 Montreal St., argued that the heritage designation should be voluntary, citing concerns over increased renovation costs due to the need for specialized tradespeople.
Despite these concerns, council voted to proceed with the designations, aligning with staff recommendations. The decision ensures the preservation of these important buildings in Kingston’s history.
