City Council could challenge provincial control over bike lanes

Provincial rules not sitting well

Kingston city council is set to discuss a motion that could push back against new provincial restrictions on bike lanes.

At their Tuesday night meeting, council members will consider supporting a call from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to maintain local control over bike lane development.

Recently, the provincial government proposed legislation requiring municipal approval to install bike lanes that reduce motor vehicle lanes. AMO argues that local governments are best suited to determine where bike lanes are needed, emphasizing that bicycle lanes are vital for urban transportation and road safety.

The council's potential support for AMO's position reflects a commitment to local governance and the importance of safe cycling infrastructure. As the discussion unfolds, residents and advocates will be watching closely to see how the city council responds to the provincial government's proposed changes.
