City joins growing group against the repayment
Kingston city council is standing by a local doctor facing a $600,000 repayment tied to drive-through COVID-19 vaccination clinics she organized in 2021.
Council passed a unanimous motion urging the Ontario government to review a decision by the Ontario Health Services Appeal and Review Board.
Kingscourt-Rideau Coun. Brandon Tozzo explained why they made the move.
The ruling requires Dr. Elaine Ma to pay back funds related to the clinics, which vaccinated thousands during the pandemic.
Tozzo added penalizing Dr. Ma could discourage innovation in future emergencies.
Sydenham Coun. Conny Glenn praised Ma’s actions, saying she prioritized public safety.
Dr. Ma received a 2021 award of excellence from the Ontario College of Family Physicians for her work. Kingston’s medical officer of health, Dr. Piotr Oglaza, also supports her.
The council’s motion highlights the clinics’ role in pandemic response and calls on the province to recognize their importance.
