The Kingston Pen drew 89,000 visitors to the city last year
City council does not want to see the Kingston Penitentiary turn into housing, which could be the case after the federal government included it into its inventory of available properties for development.
They unanimously passed a motion Tuesday night calling on the government to remove the tourist attraction from the list, and have asked staff to pursue a municipal heritage designation for the site.
The prison is part of the fabric of the city, says Councillor Don Amos.
Not only that, but Amos says it's a huge economic driver.
The prison opened in 1835 and was one of the world's oldest continous prisons upon its closure in 2013.
