National Day for Truth and Reconciliation recognized in Kingston

City Hall to be lit up in orange light

The City of Kingston will observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. The holiday, declared by City Council in 2021, aims to encourage residents to reflect on Canada’s history with residential schools and support understanding of Indigenous Peoples’ experiences.

City Hall will be lit in orange to recognize the day. The city will also showcase the Every Child Matters bus and the 94 Calls to Action panels at Confederation Basin. Indigenous-led events and ceremonies are planned across the community.

Municipal services will see changes. There will be no garbage, green bin, or recycling collection, and pickups will be delayed by one day. The Kingston Area Recycling Centre will be closed. Kingston Transit will run as usual, while administrative offices will be closed.

Community centres, like INVISTA Centre and Artillery Park Aquatic Centre, will stay open. Utilities Kingston and Kingston Hydro will operate from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
