New living wage set at $21.65
The annual living wage for Kingston and Eastern Ontario has been released, and it costs more to get by here than it did last year.
A living wage is the minimum hourly wage a worker needs to earn in order to cover their basic expenses like housing, nutritious food, and clothing among other things.
Jessica McKenzie, Public Health Nurse and Health Equity Coordinator explains how it's determined.
This year the living wage sits at $21.65.
McKenzie says local organizations can help support the movement by becoming a living wage employer.
Incoming Deputy Medical Officer of Health Dr Linna Li says when it comes to the wage and public health, its all about overall wellbeing.
