Rescue prompts urgent safety warning
Kingston Fire and Rescue is reminding the public about thin ice dangers after responding to an ice rescue on Lake Ontario Saturday afternoon.
Around 3:30 p.m., crews were called to Tiller Lane West after a black lab fell through the ice while chasing swans.
The Whig Standard reports that by the time firefighters arrived, the dog’s owner and a bystander in a kayak had already pulled the pet from the freezing water.
Ontario Provincial Police warn that ice thickness can change quickly due to currents, springs, and weather. They urge parents to supervise children near frozen waterways and keep pets leashed.
In an ice emergency, police say to call 911 and use a rope or stick to help from a safe distance.
