Downtown Kingston speed limits could be slashed

All in the name of safety

Kingston city council will consider a proposal on Tuesday night to lower speed limits in the downtown core.

The proposal suggests reducing the speed limit to 40 km/h on all streets and 30 km/h in school zones.

It would apply to the area roughly east of Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and south of Bath Road, Concession Street, and Stephen Street.

While many suburban areas have already reduced speeds on local roads and near schools, arterial roads have so far been excluded.

However, city staff recommend a uniform speed limit across all roads in the downtown area. This approach would simplify implementation, create consistent expectations for drivers, and reduce the need for extra signage.

Council is aware of possible challenges due to varying road designs, but additional measures like speed limit reminder signs, signal adjustments, and traffic calming features are planned.

So far, 10 neighbourhoods with schools have had their speed limits reduced to improve safety.
