Drug warning issued from public health

Number of poisonings growing

KFL&A Public Health has issued a warning about a sharp rise in drug poisonings in Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington.

Local partners, including Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS), identified fluorofentanyl, a powerful opioid twice as strong as fentanyl, in the unregulated drug supply. The substance is causing overdoses to occur quickly, increasing the need for harm reduction.

Health officials are urging people who use drugs to avoid using alone, carry multiple doses of naloxone, and access supervised consumption services at 661 Montreal St. in Kingston. For virtual support, the National Overdose Response Service can be reached at 1-888-688-NORS (6677).

Naloxone remains a critical tool for reversing opioid poisonings, but KFL&A Public Health warns it may require higher doses due to the potency of fluorofentanyl. Residents are encouraged to share safety tips with loved ones and visit the KFL&A Public Health website for harm reduction resources.
