Windchill could hit -35°C in the Kingston region
The South East Health Unit (SEHU) has issued an extreme cold weather warning for Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington. Windchill values are expected to drop between -30°C and -35°C starting tonight and lasting until Wednesday morning.
Environment Canada issues extreme cold warnings when temperatures or windchill reach -35°C for at least two hours. SEHU urges residents, especially children and seniors, to take precautions. Those at highest risk include infants, the elderly, outdoor workers, homeless individuals, and people consuming excess alcohol.
Exposure to extreme cold can cause frostbite or hypothermia. SEHU advises wearing layers, covering exposed skin, staying indoors in heated spaces above 20°C, and checking on vulnerable individuals.
Frostbite causes numb, white, or waxy skin, while hypothermia affects brain and muscle function. If someone is unconscious and has no pulse, call 911 and perform CPR.
