Market organizers launch petition against planned soccer stadium
The Memorial Centre Farmers’ Market and Kingston Fall Fair says they are facing sudden threats due to the plans for a privately owned soccer stadium and dome on Memorial Centre Grounds.
The plan would also include bringing professional soccer to the city.
A city staff report revealed potential losses as a result of the project including the demolition of barns for parking, the reduction of space for the fair and public sport fields, and the displacement of the indoor farmers’ market.
The Farmer's Market says that the community is rallying to stop or delay the project through a petition.
In a letter posted on their website, the Market says the decision could hurt local farmers, the bike shop Yellow Bike Action, and hundreds of market-goers.
It claims thousands of residents are concerned about losing access to fresh food and the long-standing tradition of the fair.
There’s a petition, public meetings, and calls to action you can take to help. The petition had just under 5,000 signatures as of Monday morning.
You can find the petition here.
