Brief appearance for driver of fishing boat
The second of two men facing charges after last summer's tragic boat crash on Bobs Lake has made his first court appearance.
Dakota Fillion, 27, appeared in a Kingston court Monday, charged under the Canada Shipping Act for allegedly failing to display vessel lights and not providing enough lifejackets on his fishing boat. His next court date is March 3, 2025.
The crash occurred on May 18, 2024, when Fillion’s fishing boat was allegedly hit by Matthew Splinter’s speedboat in the Buck Bay area of the lake.
Police say Splinter’s speedboat ended up on top of the fishing boat, killing three passengers, Riley Orr, Juliette Cote, and Kaila Bearman.
Splinter, 44, is facing 12 criminal charges, including impaired and dangerous operation causing death and bodily harm.
Both men’s charges remain unproven in court.
