Food insecurity declared emergency as United Way fights to help struggling families

Foodbanks need out support now more then ever

Food insecurity is worsening in the Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) region, with one in three households struggling to afford food, according to a 2024 Public Health report. This is a sharp rise from one in six the previous year. In Eastern Ontario, food insecurity jumped to 24% of households, up from 16% in 2022.

The City of Kingston has declared food insecurity a local emergency and is calling on senior governments to take action. Meanwhile, United Way KFL&A is working with local agencies to support food programs, including meal services, food boxes, and redistribution initiatives.

United Way continues to advocate for more government support while making funding decisions to address urgent needs like food security, mental health, and homelessness.

Residents can learn more about how donations are making an impact by reading United Way’s Community Impact Report. Supporters are encouraged to stay updated on ongoing efforts.
