Game-changing $1M gift puts Kingston on the genomics map

Personalized medicine breakthroughs closer to reality

It's a big step forward for advancing personalized medicine and infectious disease surveillance at Kingston Health Science Centre (KHSC).

KHSC announced that Jay and Kendal Patry have donated $1 million to establish a Clinical Chair in Genomics.

Jay Patry told KingstonDaily.ca why they made the move.

Genomics and Microbiology expert, Doctor Parmeet Sheth will be first to hold the position.

Dr. Sheth thanked the Patry family and everyone involved for making this a reality.

Genomics focuses on using knowledge about our genes (DNA) to improve medical care. The traditional method of disease treatment was a one-size-fits-all approach developed for an average person.

In genomics, scientists identify a person’s genetic variations that might affect their risk of getting sick or how they respond to treatment.

Then, scientists turn this knowledge into personalized treatments tailored to an individual's genetic makeup. It’s part of the emerging field of personalized medicine.

The announcement was made at Etherington Hall in Kingston's University District on Thursday
