Recycling, wildlife habitat, or goat snacks! All great options
With the holiday season over, many are wondering what to do with their real Christmas trees. In Kingston, several eco-friendly options are available.
The Kingston Area Recycling Centre accepts undecorated trees for free. The facility, located on Lappan’s Lane, is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors should follow the gates and ask staff where to unload. The city does not collect Christmas trees curbside.
For those looking to support local organizations, Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee welcomes trees in good condition. The trees are used in animal enclosures to create natural habitats. Gibbon’s Goats, located at 521 Roblin Road, also accepts trees. Their goats eat the needles and bark, leaving just the wood.
Another option is backyard composting. According to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, letting a tree decompose enriches the soil and provides shelter for wildlife.
