Capacity tops list of concerns
A Howe Island resident is taking legal action against the County of Frontenac, as well as the provincial and federal governments, seeking a replacement for the island's ferry.
The Whig-Standard reports, in a lawsuit filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Stephen Sorensen is asking for compensation for negligence and misrepresentation, along with $500,000 in aggravated damages and court costs.
As an alternative, he seeks $25 million to fund a new ferry. The ferry, operated by the county and owned by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, has faced criticism from residents.
Two years ago, the county reduced vehicle lanes on the ferry from three to two, cutting capacity from 15 to 10 vehicles.
This change was made after concerns about emergency evacuations. Sorensen claims these restrictions are arbitrary, leading to tripled wait times for ferry service. Frontenac County has stated it cannot comment on the ongoing lawsuit.
