13 electric buses and upgraded transit infrastructure on the way
Kingston Transit is set to receive a significant upgrade as part of a larger $83 million investment in public transit for Eastern Ontario. The City of Kingston will add 13 battery-electric buses to its fleet, a move that supports its goal of reducing emissions and enhancing public transportation.
The funding comes from federal, provincial, and municipal sources, with MP Mark Gerretsen and MPP Ric Bresee announcing the plans alongside Mayor Bryan Paterson.
Kingston has led the country in transit ridership growth, but during the pandemic that number dipped. Mayor Paterson says transit ridership is now back up to where it was before the pandemic and is continuing to grow.
MPP Bresee says it's all about improving and evolving public transportation for the people of Kingston.
In addition to the new buses, Kingston is improving infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project includes new off-road trails, sidewalks, and pedestrian crossings to ensure better connectivity and safety. New transit stations and bus shelters will also be built across the city to improve the experience for riders.
Kingston’s transit upgrades are expected to be completed in the coming years.
