Inquest announced into 2019 death of Kingston man after police interaction

An inquest will be held into the 2019 death of Jamie Deshane, 52, who died after an interaction with Kingston Police, Dr. Paul Dungey, Regional Supervising Coroner for the East Region, announced Wednesday. 

Deshane passed away in hospital on July 23, 2019. The Special Investigation Unit says Police were called in to help paramedics with a situation at Harvey's on Princess St. Deshane died in hospital later. The SIU cleared Police of wrongdoing, citing a drug-related death. 

Under the Coroners Act, an inquest is mandatory in cases like this. The inquest will review the circumstances surrounding Deshane's death to help understand what happened.

A jury will hear evidence and may make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths in similar situations.
