Kingston and the Islands MP apologizes and donates to BC Food Bank

In a recent tweet, Mark Gerretsen, Liberal MP for Kingston and the Islands, apologized to Kat Kanada, an influencer-journalist for a false claim that she was funded by the Russian government.

Gerretsen acknowledged the error, stating that his comment was inappropriate and did not reflect the heated nature of political debate in Canada.

To make amends, Gerretsen has committed to donating $1,000 to the Loaves & Fishes Community Food Bank in Nanaimo, BC, a charity chosen by Kanada. He encouraged others who shared his original tweet to contribute as well.

For those interested in supporting the cause, donations can be made via the Loaves & Fishes website at nanaimoloavesandfishes.org/donate.

Kanada responded with a post saying, "I fled the USSR to live in a country where those in power could not wield their office as a weapon against journalists. I think Mark honestly doesn't understand why that is important, but don't worry, we explained it to him." She then added, "I appreciate the apology, Mark."

Kanada is a Canadian who fled a the USSR. She posts videos on topics such as politics, culture, and gender issues.
