Yvonne Compton, President of the Kingston and District Agricultural Society speaks to council

Still lots to consider

Kingston city council has voted to enter lease negotiations with Victory Grounds Ventures for a 4,000-seat soccer stadium at Memorial Centre.

In a 9-3 vote, councillors agreed to begin community consultation and assess the project's feasibility.

The stadium would host one professional and two semi-professional soccer teams, and be covered during winter.

Local groups, including Yvonne Compton, President of the Kingston and District Agricultural Society, expressed concerns anout the plan.

Mayor Bryan Paterson emphasized the importance of considering both the losses and gains.

The proposal has evolved to preserve the barns for the farmers market.

The business and tourism communities support the project, citing potential economic benefits.

However, public meetings raised concerns about a lack of information and transparency.

Councillor Vincent Cinanni presented a petition filled with 5,051 signatures from residents of the Williamsville Community Association.

A report from city staff is expected by mid-March.
