Kingston councillor loses pay after council backs integrity ruling

30 day loss of pay

Kingston city council has upheld an integrity commissioner’s findings that Coun. Jeff McLaren violated the Municipal Code earlier this year.

The Meadowbrook-Strathcona District councillor was found to have shared confidential details from a closed meeting with constituents. The councillor made it clear he disagrees with the decision.

Council voted Tuesday night to issue a formal reprimand and suspend McLaren’s pay for 30 days. Councillors defended the arms-length investigation led by Laura Dean of Aird and Berlis LLP, stressing the need to respect its legitimacy.

Mayor Bryan Paterson ruled against McLaren’s attempt to challenge the investigation.

The complaint, filed in February, related to discussions about converting an Extendicare building in McLaren’s district into a supportive housing facility.

McLaren argued the shared details were already public, but council disagreed.

Pittsburgh District Coun. Ryan Boehme urged McLaren to accept the decision and move forward.

The investigation took 10 months due to its complexity.
