Kingston council's decision spells the end for affordable housing project

Some councillors not optimistic about the project's potential

It looks like the end is near for an affordable housing project in Kingston following a council decision Tuesday night.

Council decided to place a 0.5 hectare property located on 900 Divison Street on the open market instead of transfering it to Limestone City Co-Operative Housing at their request, meaning it's all but guaranteed developers will outbid them on the sale.

Limestone representatives asked council for the transfer so they could pursue $127  million in grants to pay for their proposed high rise with vertical farming at 900 Division Street.  They could not apply for grant funding without ownership of the site.

In September, the non-profit's request of $2.3 million in seed money was also denied by council.

The vote to put the site on the open market went through 7 to 4, with some councillors not optimistic about the project's potential.
