Kingston crossing guard wins national award for safety dedication

Hats off to a great Kingstonian!

Kingston’s Clayton Ross has been named one of Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guards in the 2024 contest by Parachute, a national charity focused on injury prevention.

Supported by Desjardins Insurance, the contest highlights crossing guards who go beyond ensuring children’s safety. Three winners across Canada are awarded $500 each, alongside matching funds for their schools.

Ross, who serves St. Paul Catholic School and Lord Strathcona Public School, was praised for his commitment to student safety and community spirit. He called the recognition “unexpected but meaningful,” adding, “I care greatly about what I do, and recognition is far down on my list of reasons to do this work.”

Ross began as a crossing guard after the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered a comedy club where he worked. He discovered the job helped him maintain routines and mental health, calling it “a perfect fit” and “a calling” he never anticipated.
