Kingston families to face $800 grocery hike as food prices rise

City declared Food Insecurity an emergency last week

The average family of four in Kingston is expected to spend $800 more on groceries in 2025, according to the latest Canada Food Price Report.

With food prices set to increase by 3-5%, the rise is expected to hit families hard, especially in the meat category, where prices could climb 4-6%.

This comes just after the City of Kingston declared food insecurity an emergency last week. The increase in food prices will only worsen the situation for many residents.

The report highlights that Ontario’s price growth will be among the lowest in Canada.

While prices for meats and vegetables will see the steepest rises, other items are expected to remain stable.

As food insecurity reaches record levels, affecting 22.9% of households in Canada, experts urge consumers to be mindful of spending habits.

Many Canadians are already opting for discounts and lower-cost brands to cope with rising costs.
