Kingston man’s tragic death ruled accidental after inquest into police interaction

Inquest confirms police and paramedics followed proper procedures

An inquest has ruled that Jamie Deshane’s 2019 death was accidental and caused by a mix of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and carfentanil.

The 52-year-old Kingston man was found unconscious in a restaurant washroom on July 23, 2019. Police and paramedics tried to help him, but he became agitated. Officers restrained him and transported him to the hospital, where he later died.

His partner, Stephanie Embury, described him as a loving father and kindhearted man. She said his drug use was an escape from hardship, not a reflection of who he was.

The inquest, led by Murray Segal, confirmed police and paramedics followed proper procedures. The jury did not make any recommendations to prevent similar deaths.

Deshane’s family says his loss continues to impact them every day. They hope his memory lives on through the love he shared with his children and those who knew him.
