Kingston named best small city in the world for clean tech innovation

The city has led the way for the past 5 years

Kingston has been ranked the best small city in the world for energy and environment innovation, according to StartupBlink’s 2025 Startup Ecosystem Awards.

The Ontario city moved up from its previous title as the top small city in North America to best globally in this category. Kingston also ranked 38th worldwide for its energy and environment sector.

For the past five years, Kingston has led Canada’s small cities in startup ecosystem strength. The city’s commitment to sustainability and clean technology has helped startups thrive in green buildings, carbon capture, battery materials, rare earth recycling, and water treatment.

Kingston Economic Development accepted the award, highlighting the city’s growing cleantech industry. Local startups like Cyclic Materials and Distributive are helping shape the future of clean technology.

With over 45 academic institutions, research centres, and industry partners, Kingston is becoming a global leader in sustainable innovation.
