Kingston Police ask for big budget boost

Mayor suggests seeking provincial support

Kingston Police Chief Scott Fraser recently presented a proposal to City Council for a 13.7% increase to the police budget.

The $54 million budget would help cover rising wages, benefits, and the hiring of 25 new officers over three years. The increase will also contribute to a 5.3% property tax hike for residents.

Fraser explained that the budget is essential to tackle growing challenges like understaffing, an increase in mental health calls, and more complex crimes. To improve response times and reduce officer workloads, additional funds are necessary.

However, Mayor Bryan Paterson suggested that the city could lobby the province for additional support to help offset these costs.

Council also discussed the potential for a regional police force to lower expenses. The budget increase also aims to address long-term disability and accommodation issues, with 31 officers currently off-duty.
