Details on why, remain under wraps

Kingston Police Deputy Chief Matt Funnell has been suspended, but the reason remains unclear.

The Whig Standard reports that Jarrod Stearns, chair of the Kingston Police Services Board, confirmed the suspension on Friday but said no further details could be shared at this time. It’s unknown whether the suspension is with or without pay or when it began.

Funnell, who was promoted to deputy chief in September, has worked for Kingston Police since 2001. He started his career with the Carleton Place Police Service in 1996 before moving to Kingston, where he worked in frontline patrol and major crimes.

Funnell helped create Kingston’s Cold Case Investigations Unit in 2005. He rose through the ranks to sergeant, staff sergeant, and inspector before becoming deputy chief.

Funnell is a graduate of Gananoque Secondary School and has long been involved in the Kingston community.
