Kingston Police warn of taxi scam targeting students

Debit cards are compromised

Kingston Police are warning the public about a taxi scam that recently targeted Queen’s University students. On October 27, 2024, between 1:00 a.m. and 1:40 a.m., a fake taxi was parked outside Queen’s ARC on Earl Street. At least two students were approached and asked to use their debit cards to pay for someone else’s fare in exchange for cash.

Later, both victims discovered their cards had been switched, and unauthorized ATM withdrawals were made. The suspect vehicle is described as a silver sedan with an orange light on top, driven by an East Indian male with a Caucasian male in his mid-20s.

Investigators believe the scam involves the fake taxi driver and accomplice swapping victims' cards before making unauthorized purchases and withdrawals. Anyone who may have fallen victim to this scam is asked to contact D/Cst. Walker at swalker@kingstonpolice.ca.
