Week of events planned
Kingston is hosting a week of events to celebrate Emancipation Day.
August 1 marks Emancipation Day, the anniversary of the abolition of slavery across the British Empire in 1834. This day honors the resilience and achievements of Black Canadians.
A flag-raising ceremony at Confederation Park at 12 p.m. tomorrow will kick off the celebrations.
Mayor Patterson and community leaders will reflect on the impact of enslavement and the fight against anti-Black racism.
In the evening, films will be shown at the Screening Room, 120 Princess St., followed by discussions with filmmakers Ngwatilo Mawiyoo and Chao Taiyana Maina.
On Friday, August 2, Pedal Works Café, 1412 Princess St., will host an Emancipation Day reception starting at 6 p.m.
The festivities conclude with the Black Block Party on Saturday, August 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Confederation Park. This event will feature a Black-owned business market, workshops, live entertainment, and more.
