Strategy combines Housing and Health Care
The City of Kingston has unveiled a plan for the future use of the former Extendicare property at 309 Queen Mary Road, proposing a "shared care" model that integrates transitional housing, primary health care, and community space.
It will be brought to council this evening.
The 287-page report outlines the project's goal to open within two years.
Home Base Housing will operate the transitional housing program, which will support up to 35 individuals aged 55 and older. Kingston Community Health Centre will run a primary health care clinic, Midtown Kingston Health Home, while Lionhearts Inc. will manage the community space as part of a vocational training initiative.
The plan aims to promote wellness, social inclusion, and support for both transitional housing residents and the wider community. The transformation of the property is estimated to cost $9.4 million. City Council is set to vote on approving the shared care model and authorizing the necessary capital spending from reserve funds.
