Kingston school air quality test provides surprising results

Tests came after student reporter's findings showed a problem

Testing at Kingston Secondary School (KSS) and Module Vanier has confirmed that air quality is “within acceptable limits,” principal Darren Seymour said in a message to families and staff.

Concerns arose after a student-led investigation reported carbon dioxide levels ranging from 1,468 to 2,612 parts per million (ppm), exceeding Health Canada’s 1,000 ppm guideline. Infectious diseases expert Dr. Dick Zoutman called those findings “concerning,” citing poor ventilation and potential cognitive impacts.

In response, the Limestone District School Board (LDSB) hired independent environmental firm Pinchin Ltd. to conduct thorough testing. Early results show no issues with air quality.

The final report will be released in January after review by school administration and facility services. LDSB plans to post the report online for families and staff.

Seymour assured the community that ensuring a safe and healthy environment remains a top priority for the school board.
