New speed limits to boost neighborhood safety
Kingston is reducing speed limits in residential areas to enhance road safety. Most residential roads will now have a 40 km/h speed limit, with a 30 km/h limit directly in front of schools.
This change aims to lower collision risks and injury severity. Driving below 40 km/h significantly reduces fatal outcomes for pedestrians compared to the former 50 km/h limit.
The new limits are part of a broader safety initiative that includes Automated Speed Enforcement, traffic calming, pedestrian crossings, and cycling infrastructure.
The first phase involves installing signs in 25 neighborhoods over the next 18 months, starting with Woodhaven, Waterloo Village, and Hillendale.
The City says the project underscores Kingston's commitment to prioritizing safety and creating consistent speed regulations across the city. For more details, visit the Get Involved Kingston project page.
