Funding to support short- and long-term solutions
Ontario is investing up to $75.5 million in municipalities to help phase out encampments in public spaces.
Kingston is in line to receive $3,362,749.
The funding will create more emergency shelter spaces and affordable housing options for vulnerable individuals, providing short- and long-term alternatives to encampments. This initiative aims to restore safety and order in Ontario's parks and public spaces.
The funding breakdown includes $50 million for near-completion affordable housing projects, $20 million to expand shelter capacity, and $5.5 million to enhance the Canada-Ontario Housing Benefit.
The province says the goal is to help people living in encampments move into stable housing, ensuring a safe transition from shelters to long-term accommodations.
A statement adds, the investment will support municipalities in addressing housing crises and promoting the safety and well-being of all Ontarians.
