Fire Prevention Week continues
Kingston Fire Officials Urge Residents to Check Smoke Alarms During Fire Prevention Week
The City of Kingston is reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as part of National Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 6 to 12. Officials say working alarms can save lives if installed, tested, and replaced regularly.
Smoke alarms should be in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed near where people sleep, and for extra safety, on every floor.
“Every second counts during a fire or other emergency, and a working alarm gives you the time you need to get to safety,” said Ted Posadowski, Kingston’s Chief Fire Prevention Officer.
According to Statistics Canada, nearly three out of four fire-related deaths from 2015 to 2021 happened in homes without a working smoke alarm.
Residents are encouraged to complete a home fire safety self-inspection using 15 safety tips provided by Kingston Fire and Rescue.
