Kingston vigil marks National Day of Remembrance with powerful tribute

35th anniversary of Montreal Massacre to be marked

The Kingston Frontenac Public Library’s Central Branch will host a community vigil on Dec. 6, marking the 35th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

The event begins at 5 p.m., with doors opening at 4 p.m. The evening includes a candlelight vigil, rose ceremony, music by The Caledonias, and Indigenous hand drummers.

This day honours the 14 women murdered at Montreal’s École Polytechnique in 1989, a tragedy driven by misogyny. A 15th beam of light will shine over Montreal tonight, symbolizing all women lost to violence.

The vigil coincides with new federal gun control measures announced this week, banning hundreds of weapon models.

Organized by local groups including Resolve and SAC Kingston, the vigil invites community members to reflect, remember, and take action against gender-based violence.
