Whiteout conditions expected
Updated Sunday at 4:37 AM: A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snow and dangerous conditions to eastern Ontario today. Additional snowfall of 20 to 30 cm is expected on top of what we've already received, with some areas, including the Algonquin Highlands, seeing up to 40 cm.
Snow is falling at a rate of 3 to 6 cm per hour, with strong winds creating whiteout conditions. Travel is not recommended as visibility will be near zero at times. Roads will quickly become snow-covered and slippery.
The worst conditions are expected this morning and afternoon, with snowfall tapering off this evening. Officials urge residents to postpone non-essential travel and prepare for possible power outages.
Public Safety Canada recommends having an emergency kit with food, water, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight. For more safety tips, visit getprepared.gc.ca.
