Kingston’s Housing Plan carries $600 million price tag

Lots of work to be done

The City of Kingston's Community Housing Cost Analysis estimates that up to $600 million would be needed to develop and maintain sufficient housing for everyone on its Centralized Waiting List (CWL) and By-Name List (BNL).

The city’s analysis covers the costs of building housing for 1,308 households on the CWL and 438 individuals on the BNL. However, land acquisition and property management are not included.

Annual operating costs would add another $22.5 million per year, with $13 million needed for rent supplements and $9.5 million for support services. Kingston already spends $11.8 million yearly to support 1,886 rent-geared-to-income units.

The report highlights potential challenges, including rising demand from new residents and the need for further detailed planning. While this is a first step toward addressing Kingston’s housing needs, city officials stress that more work is needed to turn these estimates into reality.
