Kingston's Police Board set to expand

Council voted unanimously for the move

City council's expanding the Kingston Police Service Board from five to seven members after a unanimous vote this week (oct 1).

Councillor Conny Glenn says this is a small part of answering the calls for change from the community.

Glenn says while the province sets the standards the board must follow, the board holds influence.

The board however has no impact regarding use of force directions for members, as some residents may think.

According to Mayor Bryan Paterson, the sitting board members were made aware of and were in support of expanding the membership.

Councillor Jeff McLaren's motion to have the board be expanded to nine members from five failed 3 to 9.

The board can be compromised of the following:

- the head of the municipal council or, if the head chooses not to be or is ineligible to be a member of the board, another member of the municipal council appointed by resolution of the municipality;
- two members of the municipal council appointed by resolution of the municipality;
- one person appointed by resolution of the municipality, who is neither a member of the municipal council nor an employee of the -- - municipality; and
- three persons appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council
