The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning the community about romance scams, which cause emotional and financial harm. In 2024, Canadians lost over $58.4 million to romance fraud and $310 million to investment scams, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). Many of these scams now involve cryptocurrency investments, making financial losses even worse.
Scammers use fake profiles on dating apps, social media, and email to build trust. They may ask for money for emergencies, claim they need help receiving funds, or convince victims to invest in fake business ventures. Some even use artificial intelligence to create fake voices and images.
Red flags include expressing love too soon, avoiding in-person meetings, and pressuring victims to send money. The OPP urges anyone who suspects fraud to contact police, Crime Stoppers, or the CAFC. Reporting scams can help prevent others from becoming victims.
